And the Word of the Year for 2025 is…
GEORGE, the newspaper borne of an age of Information Overload, and created for those with short attention spans or those who are short on time, has chosen the neologism “enshittification” as its 2025 Word of the Year.
Enshittification, which is also known as “platform decay,” describes the deterioration of online platforms and services as the user experience decays over time. This decay is said to be due to the prioritization of profit over user needs.
The word was coined by Canadian writer Cory Doctorow. Put differently it explains a cycle where platforms initially attract users with good experiences, then shift to benefiting business customers, and finally degrade the service for all customers in order to maximize profits for shareholders.
This last stage could include the appearance of more ads, higher service fees, and a decline in functionality.
