Many Swifties have followed the singer’s love life, which has been known to inspire music tinged with romantic longing and fairy tale endings. For some, it’s why they are so invested in her wedding.
Here is an abridged history of some of Swift’s more memorable relationships — including the one that stuck.
2008: Joe Jonas
Swift dated the singer for a few months before she turned 20.
“Taylor and I dated the Jonas Brothers; I dated Nick and she dated Joe,” Selena Gomez said on the podcast “Therapuss with Jake Shane” in 2025. “She and I like to say the best thing we got out of those relationships was each other.”
2009: Taylor Lautner
Both Swift and Lautner were in the film “Valentine’s Day,” dated briefly and have remained friendly. Lautner would later star in her music video for her 2023 song “I Can See You.” He even made an appearance onstage during the Eras Tour.
2009: John Mayer
She was 19, and he was 32 at the time. The song “Dear John” is widely believed to be about this relationship.
2010: Jake Gyllenhaal
The couple was spotted at brunch in Brooklyn. Two years later, Swift released “All Too Well,” one of her most popular songs, which fans believe to be about this short-lived relationship with the actor.
2016-2023: Joe Alwyn
Fans believe the British actor and Swift first crossed paths at the Met Gala. They would go on to date for years. Alwyn even collaborated with her on several songs under the pseudonym “William Bowery.” She described their relationship as “wonderfully normal” and “balanced” in her 2020 documentary Miss Americana. In April of 2023, fans were hesitant to believe reports that the couple had broken up. (The reports were correct.)
Late spring 2023: Matty Healy
Swift is seen with The 1975 frontman soon after her split from Alwyn. Several tracks on “The Tortured Poets Department,” including “The Smallest Man Who Ever Lived,” are believed to be about Healy.
July 8, 2023: Travis Kelce era begins
The football player attends a stop on Swift’s Eras Tour at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City, Mo., home of Kelce’s N.F.L. team. He tries, and fails, to give the singer his phone number. Later that month, on July 26, Kelce recounted this failed attempt to his brother, Jason Kelce, on an episode of their podcast “New Heights,” noting he was a “little butt-hurt” because he hadn’t been able to connect with Swift at her show. On Sept. 21, in an interview on “The Pat McAfee Show,” Kelce said he had invited Swift to come watch him play. “I threw it out there, I threw the ball in her court,” he said. Three days later, Swift attended her first Kansas City Chiefs game with his mother, Donna, at Arrowhead Stadium.
The following month, on Oct. 14, the couple each made a cameo appearance on “Saturday Night Live” and were later spotted holding hands in New York City. On Nov. 11, at a stop on the Eras tour in Argentina, Swift changed the lyrics to her closing number and sang “Karma is the guy on the Chiefs, coming straight home to me,” to Kelce, who was in the crowd.
2024: Swift-Kelce relationship in full swing
On Feb. 11, Swift makes a whirlwind trip from Japan during the Eras Tour to watch Kelce’s team win the Super Bowl. On Jun. 23, Kelce surprises the crowds at a London stop on the pop star’s tour, appearing onstage during the “The Tortured Poets Department” set.
2025: Podcast and proposal
Swift appears on Kelce’s podcast “New Heights,” giving a notably long interview about her forthcoming album, “The Life of a Showgirl,” but also opening up on subjects like her family and her hobby of baking sourdough bread. Then on Aug. 26, the couple announced their engagement in a joint Instagram post with the caption, “Your English teacher and your gym teacher are getting married.” The post came 13 — a notable number for Swift and her fans — days after their podcast episode aired.
June 13, 2026: Will they, won’t they and where?
Swift and Kelce did not get married in Rhode Island, despite months of persistent rumors. Plenty of Swifties showed up in Watch Hill, the neighborhood in Westerly, R.I., where Swift owns a home, anyway.
