Substantive science is divided into three main branches: Natural Science, Social Science, and Formal Science.
Natural Science focuses on studying natural phenomena, including physical reality. It comprises physical sciences, such as Physics, Chemistry, and Earth Sciences, and life sciences like Biology, Zoology, and Botany. Scientists here primarily use the empirical method of investigation.
Social Science is an umbrella term for disciplines that dissect human behavior, cultures, and societies. It includes Anthropology, Sociology, Psychology, Political Science, Economics, and History among others. It is based more on qualitative methodologies, unlike Natural Sciences which are quantitative.
Formal Sciences such as Mathematics, Logic, and Theoretical Computer Science are not necessarily concerned with the physical world. They are more abstract and symbolic, focusing on formal systems and their application.
