Full list of Team India’s 400-plus totals in ODI cricket


Team India notched up 402 in 49.5 overs against Afghanistan at Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow on Wednesday, June 17 in the second ODI of the three-match series. Sent into bat, the Men in Blue came up with a terrific performance to post a 400-plus total on the board.

Opening the batting, Yashasvi Jaiswal perished for four, while Rohit Sharma chipped in with 48 off 39 balls. Shubman Gill (154 off 110) and Ishan Kishan (125 off 79) then featured in a scintillating 224-run stand for the third wicket in 140 balls. Gill struck 22 fours and two sixes, while Kishan hit 14 fours and seven sixes.

The match against Afghanistan on Wednesday marked the eighth instance of India posting a 400-plus total in ODIs. In this feature, we revisit the previous seven instances of the Men in Blue putting up 400-plus runs on the board.


#1 (418/5) vs West Indies in Indore – December 2011

Team India’s highest ODI score is 418-5, which was registered against the West Indies in Indore in December 2011. India batted first in this match, which is remembered for Virender Sehwag’s dazzling 219 off 149 balls. Captaining India in this match, Sehwag slammed 25 fours and seven sixes. He added 176 for the opening wicket with Gautam Gambhir (67 off 67).

In the chase, the West Indies were bowled out for 265 in 49.2 overs despite Denesh Ramdin’s 96 off 96 balls. For India, Ravindra Jadeja and Rahul Sharma claimed three wickets each, while Suresh Raina chipped in with two.


#2 (414/7) vs Sri Lanka in Rajkot – December 2009

Team India scored 414-7 against Sri Lanka in Rajkot in December 2009 in the first ODI of a five-match series. The Men in Blue were sent into bat in this game and Sehwag once again starred with 146 off 102 balls. The knock featured 17 fours and six sixes. He added 153 for the opening wicket with Sachin Tendulkar, who contributed 69 off 63 balls. Batting at No. 3, MS Dhoni hit 72 off 53 balls.

Sri Lanka came up with a terrific effort in the chase and ended up losing the game by just three runs. Tillakaratne Dilshan top-scored with 160 off 124 balls, while Kumar Sangakkara clobbered 90 off 43. Upul Tharanga also chipped in with 67 off 60 balls. For India, Harbhajan Singh claimed 2-58 from 10 overs.


#3 (413/5) vs Bermuda in Port of Spain – March 2007

India hammered Bermuda by 257 runs in the 2007 ODI World Cup clash in Port of Spain. India batted first in this game and put up 413-5 on the board. Sehwag smashed 114 off 87 balls, while Sourav Ganguly scored 89 off 114 and Yuvraj Singh 83 off 46. In the chase Bermuda were all-out for 156 as Ajit Agarkar and Anil Kumble claimed three scalps each, while Zaheer Khan picked up two.


#4 (410/4) vs Netherlands in Bengaluru – November 2023

The Men in Blue put up an imposing total of 410-4 against the Netherlands in Bengaluru during their 2023 World Cup campaign. India batted first in this match and Shreyas Iyer top-scored with 128* off 94, while KL Rahul scored 102 off 64. The top three also chipped in with half-centuries. In the chase, the Dutch side were bowled out for 250 as four bowlers picked up two wickets apiece.


#5 (409/8) vs Bangladesh in Chattogram – December 2022

Ishan Kishan clobbered 210 off 131 balls as India beat Bangladesh by 227 runs in the third ODI of the three-match series, which the hosts won 2-1. Sent into bat, India put up 409-8 on the board as Kishan slammed 24 fours and 10 sixes. Virat Kohli also chipped in with 113 off 91.

In the chase, Bangladesh were bowled out for 182 in 34 overs. Shardul Thakur claimed three wickets, while Axar Patel and Umran Malik chipped in with two each.


#6 (404/5) vs Sri Lanka in Kolkata – November 2014

Rohit Sharma slammed a record-breaking 264 off 173 balls as India beat Sri Lanka by 153 runs at Eden Gardens in Kolkata in the fourth ODI of a five-match series. India elected to bat first in the match and Rohit was unstoppable, smacking 33 fours and nine sixes. Kohli made 66 off 64, but was run out. With the ball, Dhawal Kulkarni claimed 4-34 as Sri Lanka were bowled out for 251.


#7 (401/3) vs South Africa in Gwalior – February 2010

Tendulkar created history by becoming the first male batter to smash an ODI double hundred as India posted 401-3 against South Africa in Gwalior in February 2010. India batted first in this contest and Tendulkar scored a magnificent 200* off 147 balls. His knock featured 25 fours and three sixes. Dinesh Karthik chipped in with 79 off 85, while Dhoni hit an unbeaten 68 off just 35 balls.

In the chase, South Africa were bowled out for 248 in 42.5 overs. AB de Villiers scored an unbeaten 114 off 101 balls. With the ball, S Sreesanth claimed three wickets, while three other bowlers picked up two scalps each.
