Slay The Spire 2 Gets Second Major Update Fixing Notorious Bug

Mega Crit released Slay the Spire 2’s second “Major Update” last night on June 18, which takes all four of the beta branch patches that have been released since April 17 and combines them into one big patch for its main branch. However, while there won’t be too many surprises in this patch for those of you who have been keeping up to date with Slay the Spire 2’s fortnightly beta patches, Mega Crit promises that Major Update #2 will at least feature “a few big changes that will be totally new for everyone.”

If you haven’t been trying out Slay the Spire 2’s beta patches, here are the two main changes you’ve missed: a few Elites, such as Skulking Colony and Infested Prism, have been heavily nerfed/buffed, and Doormaker, the controversial Act 3 boss that led to the game getting review-bombed on Steam, has been removed entirely and replaced with a new boss, Aeonglass.

If you are already up to date with the contents of the past four beta patches, then don’t fret, as there are still a couple of exciting additions in Major Update #2 for you. The most intriguing one is the addition of Steam Workshop support, which means that mods for Slay the Spire 2 can be downloaded directly through the Steam client.

Mods have been available for Slay the Spire 2 from essentially day one, but it’s still a nice addition simply due to how easy it is to install mods via Steam’s client. In case you’re curious, there are already somehow (as of writing) 420 mods available for Slay the Spire 2 through the Steam Workshop. And yes, before you ask, there is one that adds Doormaker back.

There is another pretty interesting change that will be new for everyone, but this one is a little difficult to summarize, for probably obvious reasons. As Mega Crit’s Ed Lu states in the patch notes, a user named tckmn recently published a lengthy write-up about a rather nasty bug in Slay the Spire 2 that the community spotted earlier this week.

In short, Slay the Spire 2’s PRNGs (pseudo-random number generators) were (in the simplest terms) broken. Essentially, the random factor to some of the game’s mechanics were not as random as Mega Crit had intended, which resulted in stuff like the Neow’s Bones Ancient relic giving you the Debt curse 54 percent of the time.

Well, great news; they fixed it. In the process of fixing this bug, Mega Crit also inadvertently added a new card to the game–or, rather, added a card that was already supposed to be in the game from day one. That’s because the PRNGs bug caused the Rebound card to never appear in the Trash Heap event. Thank god they fixed this, because I swear that event was giving me Clash like 99 percent of the time, and I hate that bloody card.

If none of the new stuff excites you, then I guess you’ll have to wait for the next beta patch in two weeks for something juicier. Personally, I’m mostly just interested in seeing if all those negative Steam reviews about the Doormaker suddenly start disappearing now that he’s been fully removed from the game. I won’t hold my breath on that front, though.
