The 40-year-old French designer landed the top creative post at the maison in 2011 when he was just 25, making him the youngest non-founder to lead a Parisian luxury house since 1957, when Yves Saint Laurent took over from the late Christian Dior at the latter’s eponymous house.
Rousteing is also the first Black person to be appointed creative director at a French maison across all categories.
During his tenure, revenues at the house have increased almost 900%, from €30.4m (£26.8m) in 2012, Rousteing’s first year in charge to €300m last year (£264m).
Former Gucci vice president of retail for Europe Matteo Sgarbossa took over as CEO of Balmain in May 2024.
Under Sgarbossa, Balmain has pledged to implement new creative direction to promote growth.
Rousteing said: “I am deeply proud of all that I’ve accomplished, and profoundly grateful to my exceptional team at Balmain, my chosen family, in a place that has been my home for the past 14 years. My thanks go to Mr. Rachid Mohamed Rachid and Matteo Sgarbossa for their unwavering belief in me and for entrusting me with this extraordinary opportunity. As I look ahead to the future and the next chapter of my creative journey, I will always hold this treasured time close to my heart.”
Sgarbossa also commented: “I would like to express my deep gratitude to Olivier for writing such an important chapter in the history of Balmain House. Olivier’s contribution and passion over the past years will leave an indelible mark on the history of fashion.”
